what's involved in making videos

The steps below are for a basic documentary-style video - one videographer, no crew or actors. For a drama-based video, or bigger scale documentary, many more 'steps' are involved.

A lot of the steps occur simultaneously rather than in this particular order.

1. A need is presented
2. Pre-Production
   1. Script-writing
      1. Missionaries write a sample script (most often in paragraph form)
      2. I will take what they've written and write a script based on their attempt
      3. my script will be sent to missionaries for approval
      4. revise script as many times as necessary
      5. once approved by the missionaries, the script will go to bmw to be approved
   2. fund-raising
      1. determine the cost to produce the video
      2. missionaries and I will raise support for the project (combining support should make it less of a burden on one particular person)
   3. organizing
      1. break down the script
         1. Determine visual style, pacing, tone, etc.
         2. work out a shot list
      2. work out video schedule for the time i'm on the field
      3. work out logistics of travel & accommodation with missionaries
      4. find cheapest possible flights
      5. purchase necessary equipment (tapes etc.)
3. production
   1. go to the field and follow the video schedule prepared earlier
   2. adjust as neccesary
4. post-production
   1. editing
      1. import video into the computer
      2. log shots on computer (makes them easier to find later)
      3. decide which shots to include and which to leave out
      4. creat a rough-cut of the video (first assembly of the video which is prepared from selected takes, in script order, leaving the finer points of timing and editing to a later stage)
      5. analyze rough-cut and make necessary changes
      6. repeat until satisfactory
      7. add transitions, effects, music, etc.
   2. sound
      1. record narrator and voice-overs
      2. select suitable music (from a cd or record original music)
      3. edit sound (take out hums, pops, etc)
      4. mix sound levels (narrator, interviews, bacground, music, etc.)
   3. approvals
      1. video posted online to be checked by missionaries and mission board
      2. make any necessary changes to the video
   4. duplication
      1. design dvd menu
      2. design dvd label and case cover
      3. burn original dvd
      4. send original dvd to bmw hq to get dvds duplicated & printed
      5. send dvds to missionaries
