The steps below are for a basic documentary-style video - one videographer, no crew or actors. For a drama-based video, or bigger scale documentary, many more 'steps' are involved.
A lot of the steps occur simultaneously rather than in this particular order.
- A need is presented
- Pre-Production
- Script-writing
- Missionaries write a sample script (most often in paragraph form)
- I will take what they've written and write a script based on their attempt
- my script will be sent to missionaries for approval
- revise script as many times as necessary
- once approved by the missionaries, the script will go to bmw to be approved
- fund-raising
- determine the cost to produce the video
- missionaries and I will raise support for the project (combining support should make it less of a burden on one particular person)
- organizing
- break down the script
- Determine visual style, pacing, tone, etc.
- work out a shot list
- work out video schedule for the time i'm on the field
- work out logistics of travel & accommodation with missionaries
- find cheapest possible flights
- purchase necessary equipment (tapes etc.)
- production
- go to the field and follow the video schedule prepared earlier
- adjust as neccesary
- post-production
- editing
- import video into the computer
- log shots on computer (makes them easier to find later)
- decide which shots to include and which to leave out
- creat a rough-cut of the video (first assembly of the video which is prepared from selected takes, in script order, leaving the finer points of timing and editing to a later stage)
- analyze rough-cut and make necessary changes
- repeat until satisfactory
- add transitions, effects, music, etc.
- sound
- record narrator and voice-overs
- select suitable music (from a cd or record original music)
- edit sound (take out hums, pops, etc)
- mix sound levels (narrator, interviews, bacground, music, etc.)
- approvals
- video posted online to be checked by missionaries and mission board
- make any necessary changes to the video
- duplication
- design dvd menu
- design dvd label and case cover
- burn original dvd
- send original dvd to bmw hq to get dvds duplicated & printed
- send dvds to missionaries
